10 Self Care Ideas For Busy Moms

The next phrase might make me look like an awful person, but I have to say it. Before I became a mother myself, I never realised how exhausting kids can be. I thought that staying at home with your kids was like a permanent staycation, so why were those women complaining? After one year of motherhood, I can say that raising children is harder than any job I`ve ever had. And don`t get me wrong, I love spending time with Adelina. I am always happy to do that. But it takes a toll, both mentally and physically.

I don`t know if it gets easier once they`re bigger, you just replace one problem with the next. For instance, we now struggle with teething. It`s hard emotionally because sometimes no matter what I do, I can`t help my baby, and I hate seeing her in pain. She`s also learning how to walk, which means I do more marathons than an athlete. I am exaggerating of course, but you get the idea. Unlike in previous jobs, I am on duty 24/7. And again, not complaining because most times you`ll see a big smile on my face.

My best friend asked me one day how I manage to stay so calm through it all. Truth be told, I am lucky enough to have a supportive partner, who shares the responsibilities. I also think that self-care is important, and focus on that. I know that sadly not everyone has a great support system around them, but you should always try to get a few moments for yourself. They`ll do wonders for your mental health, which in turn will make motherhood easier. So without any further ado, let`s go through my favourite self-care ideas.

1. Take a nap
I don`t know when`s the last time I had a proper good night sleep. Probably before I got pregnant. I now cherish those 20-30 minutes when I get to lay around. I wake up energised and happy. As a mum, you`re constantly doing something, so most times a little break feels like heaven.

2. Have a facial
Moms don`t really have time for the 10-steps skincare routine, do they? At least not every day. Sometimes even applying a face mask will make you feel so much better, and your skin will thank you for it as well. I love having 5 minutes to myself at night when I can play around with my toners and serums. We often think that a skincare routine involves a lot of time, but truth be told, it`s just a few minutes a day. And we deserve that!

3. Catch Up With A Friend
As we grow older, our friends' circle gets smaller. That`s life, and it gets worse once you`re a mom because you have less time and different priorities. But good friends will always be there, even if you don`t see each other daily. That being said, it feels great to catch up with them, online or in real life. You share what`s new, reminisce about old things.

4. Have a movie night
Your kids are sleeping, and you have a bit of spare time. What to do? Enjoy one of your favourite movies, obviously. I always pick an old favourite rather than a new release, cause familiarity brings me comfort. Also, I know it`s something I`ll enjoy rather than investing time in a movie I might hate.

5. Enjoy your favourite dessert
Life's too short and messy to skip dessert. Whether you're a chocolate lover like myself, or you prefer something fruity, a little slice of cake is guaranteed to put a big smile on your face.

6. Bake something yummy
If we're on the subject of dessert, why not make it yourself? Baking is so much fun, even if you're not a great cook. You just follow the instructions and voila, you have a tasty reward. Also, if you are a mum, chances are you want to avoid store-bought cakes as much as possible. Not shaming anymore, but most moms I've talked to like baking the treats themselves. That way you know exactly what's inside and it's also something fun to do with older kids.

7. Listen to a motivational podcast
This year I've started getting into podcasts, and I really wish I'd started sooner. There's a vast amount of subjects, and I always feel so motivated afterwards. Nothing better than women supporting women.

8. Have a sexy night with your partner
Not really sure how to phrase this, but you get the idea. We all know that sex after kids is not the same: you're tired, you're in a hurry sometimes, yadda yadda yadda. So schedule something more romantic, to break the routine.

9.Buy something you've wanted for a long time
Before you call me a hypocrite for promoting sustainable living, yet encourage you to shop, hear me out. Not every purchase is a victory for capitalism. I am not saying that you should spend your salary on a shopping spree. But getting a little treat always feels nice, whether it's a lipstick or that pot you've been meaning to buy ever since you saw it on Insta. I always say we need to promote healthy consumerism, as weird as it might sound. If it's something you'll use and it's quite an ethical purchase, go for it.

10. Try on a different makeup or hairstyle
I don't know about you, but ever since I became a mum I don't have time for fancy makeup or sophisticated hairstyles. I am good with my skincare routine, but as far as makeup goes, I am doing the minimum. I like it cause I am not going out much anyway, but sometimes I miss feeling hot. In days like those I like to play a bit with makeup, and remind myself I can still apply eyeliner.
